Harpoon a Fish Beginner Guide

Learn the Harpoon a Fish core loop, finish a useful first session, and avoid wasting catches before you understand depth, evolution, and the aquarium.

Your first ten minutes

Join the official experience from FirstTry and let every interface element finish loading. Follow the tutorial prompts visible in your server; current walkthroughs show guidance for the opening actions, but prompts and button positions can move between updates and devices. Your first goal is not a rare fish. It is one complete, understood catch.

Find a target you can see clearly. Aim at the fish, fire the harpoon, and respond to the reel prompt. The official description names those three actions in that order. Watch what happens after the fish reaches you: note any Index notification, weight change, inventory entry, or other reward. That single observation teaches you more than repeating inputs without reading the result.

Open the Index and inventory once. The official listing says there are more than 1,800 unique fish in the Index, so you should expect collection progress to unfold over many sessions. Do not worry about memorizing every entry at the start.

Learn the catch loop

Use the same simple routine for the next few targets:

  1. Choose a clear target. Avoid aiming through several overlapping fish while learning.
  2. Center the shot. Let the camera settle before firing.
  3. Fire once. Spamming the control makes it harder to understand a miss or cooldown.
  4. Watch the connection. A miss and a failed reel are different problems.
  5. Reel according to the live prompt. The current interface is the authority for timing and input.
  6. Confirm the result. Check the Index, displayed weight, and storage before choosing the next target.

If the shot never connects, adjust position and aim. If it connects but the catch escapes, concentrate on the reel phase. If the catch succeeds but no expected counter moves, reopen the relevant panel and verify that you were watching the correct value.

For a deeper control breakdown, use How to Harpoon.

Turn catches into progress

The official description says to get fat and sink deeper. That establishes the direction of progression without publishing every threshold. Current community walkthroughs describe building weight through catches and using visible depth or route feedback, but exact values should be read from your live server.

After several catches, compare your displayed weight with the earlier value. Then look for a route, prompt, gauge, or movement change that suggests a deeper area is available. If nothing changes, keep using reliable catches and check whether the game is asking for another condition. Do not discard a useful fish because an old guide supplied a number that your current interface does not confirm.

Catch again

Choose this when your current target is reliable and the displayed progression value is still moving. Repetition is useful when you can measure the result.

Check the Index

Choose this when a fish looks new or you received a collection notice. A new entry can matter even when it is not your heaviest catch.

Pause and inspect

Choose this before evolution, aquarium placement, or another irreversible-looking action. Read the selection, cost, slot, and result text first.

Protect useful catches

The official description explicitly includes stealing other players’ fish. Treat nearby players as part of the situation, especially while a catch is exposed or while you are reading menus. Resolve the catch, move to a safer position if the game allows it, and only then spend time comparing panels.

Stealing is a game mechanic, not permission to scam, harass, or request account access. Never share a password, browser cookie, two-step code, or recovery information for help catching, storing, or transferring a fish. Keep every action inside normal Roblox and game interfaces.

If you lose a fish, identify the moment it became vulnerable. Were you still reeling, standing idle, or navigating a menu? Adjust that part of the route rather than assuming every loss is a technical problem.

Meet evolution and the aquarium safely

The official game text confirms that fish can be evolved and that a caught fish can be placed in the aquarium to grow a new pet. It does not publish a complete current recipe, cost chart, growth timer, or replacement rule. Open both interfaces early, but use an ordinary catch for your first test if the game asks you to commit something.

Before confirming evolution, record the selected fish, displayed requirement, cost, and preview. Before aquarium placement, identify the selected slot and any replacement warning. If a field is blank or unclear, close the dialog and keep the fish until you understand the choice.

The official New Pet badge confirms that pet growth is an intended outcome. Community guides also describe broader aquarium benefits, but exact slot and earning details need a current in-game check. See Aquarium for a decision checklist and How to Evolve Fish before committing a catch.

Build a useful first-session route

A strong beginner session can be modest. Complete one understood catch, add at least one clearly new Index entry, increase a displayed progression value, inspect the evolution and aquarium screens, and leave with your most useful catch accounted for. That gives you a foundation without depending on rare luck.

Use this sequence:

  • Catch an easy visible target and verify the result.
  • Repeat until you can distinguish a miss from a failed reel.
  • Open the Index after an unfamiliar catch.
  • Check weight and any depth feedback.
  • Attempt a deeper route only when the live interface supports it.
  • Inspect, but do not blindly confirm, evolution and aquarium actions.
  • Redeem supported codes after noting your balances.

The Codes page records the officially advertised MONSTER reward and the official-group BETA announcement, including what remains unknown.

Fix common beginner problems

The harpoon keeps missing

Choose a larger or less obstructed target, stop moving the camera for a moment, and fire once. Check whether the projectile travels where the reticle points. Device sensitivity and camera behavior can differ, so the visible prompt and your own shot path matter more than a universal key list.

The fish connects but does not arrive

Focus on the reel stage. Watch for a timing indicator, changing tension, or button prompt in the current interface. Avoid mashing every control, because that hides which input worked. The detailed mechanics page gives a controlled practice routine.

You are not sinking deeper

Confirm that the weight or other displayed progression value increased after recent catches. Rejoin a fresh server if the gauge appears stuck. Then inspect the route for an explicit requirement. Exact layer boundaries remain a live-game value, so use How to Sink Deeper rather than forcing an unsupported number.

A menu or code box is missing

Close tutorial overlays, check Settings, and rejoin an updated public server. On a narrow screen, a panel may cover corner controls. Do not type reward codes into public chat.

What to record as you learn

For an unfamiliar fish, record only what the game actually shows: name, visible type or rarity, encounter area, displayed weight, Index result, and check date. Leave a field unknown when the interface does not show it. One observation cannot establish a drop rate, and a community nickname should not replace the in-game name.

This small habit becomes especially useful for sea monsters. Official badge metadata confirms KRAKEN, MEGALODON, CROCODON, POSIONED HEXJAW, and NIGHTCRAWLER, but it does not publish their current locations or encounter rates. The Sea Monsters guide explains how to prepare without inventing those values.
