Use the Index as a decision tool

The official Harpoon a Fish description says the Index contains more than 1,800 unique fish. That makes it more than a short checklist. Use it to answer three practical questions after a catch: is this entry new, does it help the run you are currently attempting, and should you keep it for evolution, aquarium placement, or a record attempt?

Open the Index after catching something unfamiliar. Read the exact in-game name and any fields the current interface displays. Do not infer a rarity, location, rate, or value from color alone. Those systems can change, and many exact fields are not published in the official listing.

Documented sea-monster Dex

The entries below are supported by official Roblox badge metadata. A badge name confirms that the monster concept exists; it does not, by itself, establish a current spawn location, rarity, encounter rate, weight, drop, or capture requirement. Those fields remain intentionally unset until the game supplies evidence.

What to record for any fish

A useful entry starts with the exact name shown by the game. Add the visible type or rarity only when the interface states it. Record where you encountered the fish in language another player can reproduce, but distinguish your observation from an official location. Add the check date because routes and labels may change.

Use these fields:

  • Name: exact capitalization and spelling from the live game.
  • Type or rarity: only the label shown by the current interface.
  • Source: live catch, Index entry, official badge, or another traceable source.
  • Encounter area: your observed location, with server date; not automatically a guaranteed spawn.
  • Effect or use: weight, Index, evolution, aquarium, or record relevance only when observed.
  • Verification state: officially confirmed, repeatedly observed, community reported, or needs testing.
  • Checked date: the day the field was last confirmed.

Leave a value blank when you do not know it. “Unknown” is more useful than a precise-looking guess that sends players to the wrong place.

Index completion strategy

With more than 1,800 advertised entries, completion works best in small passes. First learn the common catches along your reliable progression route. Then revisit layers or areas after your displayed depth and capabilities change. Finally, target gaps by comparing the exact names around each empty entry, if the interface provides that context.

Do not spend every session chasing one rumored fish. Set a measurable target such as five new entries or a complete pass through a reachable area. When a catch is new, secure it and let the Index register before moving on. If the notification does not appear, reopen the Index and rejoin once before repeating a difficult encounter.

Variants may count separately, but the official description does not publish the full variant taxonomy. Let the Index itself decide whether two visually similar catches are distinct entries.

Weight, size, and world records

Official badge metadata includes a WORLD RECORD concept for a species. That confirms species-level competition but does not establish the current measurement formula or how a record is displayed. When attempting a record, capture the species name, displayed measurement, result screen, and date. Compare like with like; a different variant or server display may not belong to the same record category.

Do not confuse visual size with confirmed weight. Record the number the game shows. If a badge or record notification appears, capture it before another menu covers the result. One unusually large catch does not establish a probability, so avoid turning it into a claimed rate.

For ordinary progression, a fish can still be useful without being a record. Check whether it moves the displayed weight or another live progression value, then decide whether to continue catching, store it, evolve it, or use the aquarium.

Decide what to do with a new catch

Use a three-step pause. First, check whether the Index registered the fish. Second, inspect the current run: does this catch help you sink deeper or complete a goal? Third, open the evolution or aquarium preview only if you are considering a long-term use.

Avoid confirming a conversion when the selected fish or result is unclear. The official game text supports evolution and pet growth, but exact recipes, slot rules, and replacement behavior need current interface evidence. Keep the catch until the decision screen is understandable.

When other players are near, resolve the exposed catch before browsing. Stealing is an advertised mechanic, and a valuable Index discovery is not protected merely because you opened a menu.

Verify community fish claims

A useful community report shows the exact in-game name, a current interface, the encounter context, and a date. A cropped image with no identity or an undated list should be treated as a lead. Search the live Index and official badge list before adopting an alternate spelling.

For POSIONED HEXJAW, preserve the official badge spelling when referencing the badge. “Poisoned Hexjaw” can be used as a human-readable alias, but it should not silently replace the official string. This prevents two records from being created for one monster.

Exact locations and rates deserve repeated observations under comparable conditions. Until then, describe where a player saw the fish rather than claiming that it always spawns there.

Sources and check date

  • Official Harpoon a Fish Roblox experience — Index size claim and the broader catch loop.
  • Official Roblox badge metadata — named monsters and the WORLD RECORD per-species concept.
  • Live game interface — required authority for current names, visible rarity, measured values, and Index registration.

This Index guide was checked on October 17, 2026. Monster locations, encounter rates, rarities, weights, and rewards remain live-game fields until supported.
